First off, I must say that what I'm gonna compared is the book I've red and the movie I've seen, however I dunno if that book was the original one, or whatsoever if it was only a special edition for English students.
Is the first time it happens to me, in which the movie happens to be way better than the book. I didn't like Frankenstein's book at all, I didn't enjoy the novel while I was reading it. Personally the book was quite confusing and cheap, also the paste of the book was really incoherent, especially at the end. On the other hand, I really like the movie, I think the plot and the cast of the movie is good enough, and the paste is not too fast neither too slow, it's ok.
So for me, all the difference between the book and the movie can be putt in only one : In the movie is shown the interesting and important story facts erasing all the unnecessary book details, even more, there're some good scenes in the movie which are not mention in the book, this ones really help the audience to a better understand of the story.

the book you've been reading is an abridged version, adapted to students of English at a high intemediate level. Of course, it has been quite poor and unsubstantial to you. I recommend you to read Mary Shelly's original Frankenstein. You'll see what difference it makes!
